Thecity Of Pembroke Pines celebrates Jacklyn Laflamme, the 2013-2014 Studio18 In The Pines artist in residence. As the one year program comes to an end a ribbon cutting ceremony was held to acknowledge the original public art project which enhances the North entrance to The Susan B. Katz Theater for The performing Arts.
Laflamme was celebrated by elected officials, members of the Arts and Cultural Advisory Board, The Artists of Studio 18 and local residence. Following the ribbon cutting Laflamme was presented with flowers and a certificate of appreciation.
Attendees gather and point to the new mural, Mayor Frank C. Ortis reads a certificate of appreciation, also in attendance, Holly Bonkowski, Norma and Ben Menasche, Rose Colombo, Ruth Rosenberg, Vice Mayor Jay Schwartz, Commissioners Carl Shechter and Iris Siple and Jill Slaughter.
RedEYE is the hottest art and entertainment event of the summer. An underground art tour de force, RedEYE this year is “ReBOOTED” to feature street art, comic art, body art, urban inspired and cutting edge art and social commentary. Visual art and performance pieces are complemented by live bands, digital art displays, interactive installations, fashion, food trucks, indie film shorts and wild fun.
It’s the hottest art event of the summer. Don’t be left in the cold.

The energy that radiated throughout the alleyway was unbelievable at this amazing pop-up event organized in part by Sherryl Muriente & Beju of Lejobart.
Last weekend I completed a very special project at The Shops At Pembroke Gardens. I was commissioned to paint the very first of their 56 benches and trash receptacles located throughout the promenade of this amazing outdoor mall.

The Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance worked with Art Serve and invited artists to paint live at the event Palette To Palate at Gallery ONE – A DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Hotel.

The Power of painting live is very exhilarating…
It is a form of improvisational performance art, in which artists complete a visual art piece in a public performance. In this particular case I had two hours to complete a 4′ x 6′ canvas. Using spray paint and markers, I completed the task. It is a contrast to working in the studio and having the gift of time to create, detailed fine art.

The Power to participate creates great opportunity…
In this particular case Tales Of The Surfside Turtle sculptures will be displayed throughout the Town of Surfside from January 2013 to June 2014. A chance to showcase the work, artists’ talents and support the community’s effort to promote public art.
I would like to thank The City Of Surfside for choosing me to participate, it has been an incredible opportunity!
** Remember, because all sea turtles in Florida are classified as ‘threatened’ or ‘endangered’, these sea turtles are afforded special protection under U.S. Federal law. It is illegal to tamper with turtles and their nests.
I was honored to be one of 18 artists selected to participate in this unique Art In Public Places event in the Town of Surfside where the sculptures were to be displayed throughout the city. My 4’ high fiberglass/ resin turtle arrived and it was love at first sight. I named him Tortuga. This magical creature filled my studio and inspired me. I was so excited to get started painting and even more excited to finish. As I neared the end, it dawned on me, Tortuga was a girl… Mme Tortuga.
As part of the project we were asked to write the Tale of The Surfside Turtle. Here is Mme Tortuga’s Tale:
Madame Tortuga
A turtles tail will tell the tale
Of Madame Tortuga as she set sail…
Once upon a foreign shore
A plain white turtle seeking more
Paris is the place to be
It didn’t seem to meet her needs
She swam and swam with all her might
Almost ready to give up the fight
And in the distance, saw a shimmering light
It was so colorful and Oh so bright
Like nothing seen in all her life
She reached the shore with such delight
And there she met her muse, her light

Who taught her about color, and the beauty of life
She showed her valor in the butterflies flight
And the shade of strength in a tigers might
Tiki torches lit the beach
While a lazy crocodile tried to sleep
A dolphin played and had a ball
She was truly amazed by it all
Jet set girl showed her finer things
Like tea cups and jewels and the richness it brings
Her voice which came from her big mouth lips
Told tales of seahorses, birds and magical fish
She kissed three toads so she could see
If prince charming was meant to be
Instead she grew a big red heart
And fell in love with real cool art
Oh no the time has come to part
With a peaceful wink and one final drink
Madame Tortuga had so much to think
With Cosmopolitan in hand
Time spent here was simply grand
A toast to the artist, big thanks to Jacklyn
Who showed her a lifestyle to imerse herself in
She was finally ready, ready to roam
Swim the big ocean and find her way home
All painted and pretty with tattoos of her own
We all have our journeys some not so far
With imagination and color
We can all be bright stars!
The Power to be creative…
We all have the power to be creative. No matter what shape or form the canvas is, the same principles to organize the elements within the work apply.
I would like to thank all the artists at Studio 18 and everybody who supported me while working on Mme Tortuga!
Mario Uriel a fellow artist who works for the City Of Pembroke Pines, was interviewing me for another mural project. Mario has always been a fan of art in public places. I told him about “The 13th Street Outdoor Gallery Project ” and he mentioned that he has always wanted to create a documentary about artists who make a difference.
I put him in touch with The 13th Street Alliance and H.O.M.E.S. Inc. and he made his pitch to produce a book about how a community came together to paint the town and make a difference.
It is so important to network you never know who you may meet and where their interests lie. As artists we need to surround ourselves with a team of experts. In this particular case a win, win situation, Mario has a new work for his portfolio and the 13th Street Outdoor Gallery Project has further documentation of the event. All this can help in many ways, one being to add credibility to the project another, to help obtain further funding for future endeavors… It helps everyone involved!
