Cradle Of Life: ARAISM MOVEMENT 12

Cradle Of Life: Araism Movement 12This past week we have been so honored, Studio 18 In The Pines hosted it’s very first international show. Cradle Of Life: Araism Movement 12, a snapshot of life in Africa.

Cradle Of Life: Araism Movement 12 With the first beat of the drums we all knew we were in for a treat. At the opening reception, we got to hear from the artists as they spoke about their magnificent paintings and shared the rich history behind the movement. We learned that this was their first time in America and we felt their enthusiasm.

We mixed and mingled, tasted a sampling of African cuisine, had a sip of wine and then we danced….

Doing Business As… Artist Entrepreneurs

Emergent

The Doing Business As… Artist Entrepreneurs Exhibition was founded in 2009. A collaboration between myself, Virginia Fifield and LeeAnna Yater. We took it upon ourselves to produce a professional high quality art exhibition in a public gallery; the three of us designed the concept and curated the first exhibition, complete with a catalogue to document the artists and their work.

Our mission was to launch the careers of it’s participating artists by mentoring and providing practical artistic experience and exposure for their artwork. The positive outcome of the first DBA exhibition persuaded us to continue this yearly event and promote our brand Doing Business As… Artist Entrepreneurs.

Studio 18 In The Pines Presents Transitions

Featuring the art works of:

Curated by Robyn Vegas

Opening Friday, January 3, 2014 – Closing February 13, 2014

My transitions showpieces offer a glimpse into my creative process and the relationship between my drawing and sculptures. My sculptures bring to life the shape of water by transforming flat satellite images of Florida waterways into constructed wood forms: while my drawings bring to life the energy of flowing water that often goes unnoticed. This interplay between the physical presence of the sculptural works and the energy of the drawings makes Florida’s waterways difficult to ignore.  Michael Harris

This series is particularly meaningful to me. These graphite pencil and watercolor paintings of ballerinas were originally intended for a show in August 2013 at Studio 18 in the Pines, called “On Common Ground”. I had initially simply wanted to create a series of beautiful images of ballerinas and the “common ground” was the stage they performed on. However, my entire focus changed somewhat when I began to experience some serious personal health issues and had to request to be excused from the “On Common Ground” exhibition at Studio 18. I continued to work on the series, though I was experiencing a great deal of pain, fear and uncertainty about my life expectancy…but I kept working on them. And then suddenly I was seeing this kind of parallel- I was feeling so much pain and feeling so unwell, why was I even persisting in painting and drawing this series everyday? And then as I studied all of these images of these beautiful ballerinas I wanted to draw, I could see the pain that they suffered through to create this phenomenal Art form. I could see the strained and aching muscles; understand the “work through the pain” mentality that drives these women in the creation and perfection of their art form. As I continued to progress through the series I noticed that I began to use black in a number of areas where I could feel the pain of these dancers’ muscles. I could see that they were suffering through their pain to create their Art as I was doing by persisting with the series when all around me were saying “stop”, “you don’t have to finish it”, “everyone will understand if you don’t or can’t finish”. But I understood their drive and dedication as my own. I made it my own. I made it, I finished the series and I am proud that I did…I hope I did these incredibly devoted Artists justice. Dawn V
